First Birthday Character Popularity Shenanigans!

Phantasia is now a year old! To ‘celebrate’ I’ve decided to run a full-on character popularity poll.

You can vote for up to five characters! I’ve put the most featured ones in the poll, but if you have a favourite who isn’t on there, then leave a comment letting me know who you want to cast a vote for!

And if you’ve forgotten who everybody is, there’s always the cast database to remind you!

I’m not sure how long I’ll keep the poll open – a few weeks at the very least – but I’ll let you know when I have a concrete date. So, eh, what are you waiting for?!

You know, almost everyone else’s personalities are clearly illustrated except for Phantasia’s. You describe her as headstrong, mischievious, curious, and caring however, it is hard for us the reader to gauge that for ourselves because, in my most humblest of humble opinions, she has recieved little character development. Her character was predefined before we even met her so we don’t really get that “get to know you” phase. Like, for example, Faye’s character is slowly becoming more and more clear to us, Lyra is more than just a foul mouthed vagrant girl, Theseus has become a bit more than a jock and Joel is STILL pathetic, although now we know he’s just trying to live up to his father’s image, but Phantasia is just Phantasia. If you ARE going to rewrite the first few chapters, may I suggest a slower development on her character instead of just throwing her at us all at once? My personal opinion, take it or leave it. Just keep writing. I find I am always excited for Friday morning to come, more because of the update than anything else.

I think I know where you’re coming from, actually. Phantasia’s one of the harder characters to write for. There is a little development in an upcoming chapter (#56 I think) that turns things on their head a bit. It was a realisation I should have made ages ago, but it took Faye’s analytical tactlessness to point it out. It’s certainly something I’ll be weaving into earlier chapters a little more.

I also wonder if it’s something to do with viewpoint. It’s much easier to develop a character, peel away the layers of their identity etc, when they’re not the ones in focus. But Phantasia is the VP character from the start, and doesn’t get a break until around ch.14. And when she *does* get a break, and someone else is in charge, they’re rarely interacting with Phantasia herself, so you never really see her from an outside perspective.

One of the things I’ve been pondering is reinstating one of the older prologues, and generally developing that and the opening chapters a little more. It’s the part of the story I’ve always been least happy with.
