A faerie of unknown origin who seeks her identity. Optimistic and naive, she believes she can be everybody’s friend and would rather people didn’t fight. She has the power to purify the planet’s life-force and thus nullify magic. An unsociable daydreamer who lives alone, Dante trusts few people but will fight to protect those he does. He has a particular obsession with the image of Erebus and has demonstrated magical ability when placed under extreme stress.

A Raven girl with bipolar problems and Phantasia’s first human friend. Though she is friendly and extroverted, she is plagued by self-doubt and jealousy – especially concerning her boyfriend, Joel. Kaori’s boyfriend. He has a manic personality and is easily fascinated by anything remotely esoteric or supernatural. Thanks to his brash, do-or-die nature this can get Joel into all sorts of trouble.

The oldest student in Sapphire Second, Doyle is a self-assured womaniser who has difficulty sustaining long-term relationships. Popular with the younger girls but not trusted by others, his Casanova tendencies hide a fragile heart. A quiet, responsible boy who loves technology and is rarely seen without a gadget at hand. John’s family run a business specialising in salvaging, repairing and selling machines. His goal in life is to unravel the mystery of the Great Cataclysm.

The youngest member of Sapphire Second, who strives to bring light and humour to even the darkest of situations. Lysander spends much of his free time plotting shenanigans and japes with her every-present comedy companion, Angelo. The clown of Sapphire Second, who speaks in his own unique way and forms a double-act with Lysander. Angelo likes to dress in outlandish costumes and act out bizarre characters in the middle of everyday situations.

Ruby Second

Photographer and graphic designer for school newspaper Veritas, she is rarely seen without a camera or her plush cat, Kit. Katrina’s family run an orphanage where several of her fellow students live, and she acts as an older sister to many. Sports reporter for Veritas, accomplished athlete and martial artist, and born cynic. Theseus considers it his job to keep the Veritas team safe from their flights of fancy. He has an on-off relationship with Amanda.

A cynical, foul-mouthed girl who appears to hate the world around her. She has little patience for ignorance, but secretly watches out for her friends behind her unsociable exterior. She hails from a tribe of vagrants and is well-versed in supernatural lore. Self-titled Poet Laureate of Torsten. He refuses to believe in things like love, regarding them as transitory expressions people use to give life meaning. Byron is infamous for his hallucinogenic drug usage, which he explains away as ‘inspiration’.

Devout follower of the Hawk subculture, he plots to become famous so that others follow him. Vincent and Byron are good friends, even though their respective subcultures despise one another. A retiring poet who does his best to keep out of everyone else’s affairs. His technical knowledge rivals John’s.

Topaz Second

A self-conscious girl who is continuously rejected from every social circle she tries to enter. Her past relationship with Joel causes tension with her once-best-friend, Kaori. Loud-mouthed, bi-polar editor and chief reporter for school newspaper, Veritas. She is obsessed with deposing Godhand and proving that demons and magic are real. Her flights of fancy get her accused of paranoia.

Well-mannered reporter and PR person for Veritas and childhood friend of Phoenie, Katrina and Amanda. Andromeda likes to study psychology in her spare time and believes diplomacy can solve any conflict. A Hawk girl who blindly follows their fashion and hopes that she will one day be recognised by a guy with high social kudos. Secretly she cares for Shelley as a sister and has a violent temperament that would get her banished from the Hawks if made public.

A boy from the big city. The pride he has for his (allegedly) top-of-the-line car is only matched by his pride in his own appearance. His family have pushed him into the wilderness because of his academic failures in the past. An air-headed boy with an incurable habit of talking to girls’ chests rather than their faces. He hangs around with Chris because he thinks the would-be playboy will help him get laid.

Quiet but highly-regarded girl who scores highly in all exams and assessments, but is too modest to make a big deal out of it. A lethargic boy who only shows up at school because he’d be bored otherwise. He once hung around with the Ravens but turned his allegiance to the Hawks when he failed to attract any Raven girls.

Emerald Second

Purple-haired environmentalist and scatter-brained hippie. Ceres has one of the highest ratings out of the second year students, but her tomboyish personality tends to belie her achievements. She lives in the forest, which her tribe swore to protect. Talkative ditz, top athlete, and pop-idol sensation. Korrigan remains oblivious to her fame among the younger students and just wants to enjoy her life. Her relationship with Ceres is a frequent source of gossip.
astrid Astrid Garland elizabeth Elizabeth
Daughter of Bishop Wotan, she patrols the school corridors on the lookout for ‘heretics’, whom she wants to bring to justice. Taught in more academic subjects at Godhand’s own school, Astrid’s presence at the Academy is a constant reminder of Godhand’s power. A follower of Godhand and member of Astrid’s posse, Elizabeth prefers to savage the self-esteem of those her ‘religion’ is opposed to. Her parents are wealthy and hold a high position in Godhand’s ranks.

The other member of Astrid’s posse. Vespa was born into a vagrant tribe that was slaughtered by Godhand when she was only an infant. Godhand ‘adopted’ and raised her, but her violent tendencies are a holdover from an infancy of bloodshed. A shy girl with anxiety issues who uses acting as escapism. Best friends with Phoenie, Katrina and Andromeda since childhood, and on/off girlfriend to Theseus, depending on her mood. Amanda was assigned to infiltrate Godhand by Phoenie.

Boitrous girl, a star of the school sports team, and obsessed with competition and success. Hermia wants to be the very best at what she does and is driven to practise every day to improve. Quiet boy who excels at sports and hangs around Hermia, whom he has a deep admiration for. Plagued by insecurity he can never find the courage to admit his true feelings and instead bumbles along behind her like a loyal puppy.

The Staff of Torsten Academy

Headmaster of Torsten Academy. He appears to be a quiet, ineffective man – but this bumbling persona is just a ruse. He fought in the Apostle Wars as the famed warrior Siegfried the Unparalleled and even knows Queen Thetis.

Mythology teacher, rarely seen without a hip-flask of some description. Considers himself to be a bit of a charismatic rogue. Valentine joined the Temple of Solomon as a teenager and learned demon summoning, but fled to become a wandering investigator. Culture Studies teacher, and tutor of Sapphire Second. She is relaxed to the point of lazy, but cares deeply for her pupils. She grew up with Rembrandt Payne and is known as ‘Verdandi the Seer’ thanks to her perceptive foresight.

History teacher who once travelled the globe as a vagrant. He has collected a plethora of artefacts from the ruins and tribes of the world. Unlike his brother he is laid back and doesn’t take his work seriously. English teacher with a love for esoteric languages and skilled with a variety of incantations. She is also a qualified enchantress and like to place beneficial magicks on obscure items for fun. A former student, Tes is also the youngest member of staff.

Art teacher famed for her pink hair and no-nonsense attitude. Sometimes referred to as having an ‘emotional kaleidoscope’ because of her unpredictable mood swings. She is well versed in curses and anti-curses and is someone few people dare to cross. Music teacher and Kaori’s mother. She is talented in a wide variety of instruments. Yuki is an ‘audiomancer’ who uses music to control her empathic powers, which can change the mood of any area. Like her daughter, she used to associate herself with Ravens.

Maths teacher and school nurse. She delights in numerical patterns and her classroom is like a shrine of obsessive-compulsive disorder. Laura is also the school’s chief nurse and uses precise healing magicks and alchemy to heal almost any wound or disease. Science teacher, who delights in using weapons and pyrotechnics to teach her (usually disturbed) students lessons in physics and chemistry. Lucia is also a master of transmutation and delights in mixing science and magic to create explosive results.

Unlike his fellow teachers he maintains a healthy cynicism towards the supernatural and has no magical power to speak of. Physical Education teacher and oldest member of staff. A sage from across the seas, he is the only member of staff allowed to deviate from the standard uniform. He is as much a teacher to his fellow staff as he is to his teenage students.

Nature Studies teacher, who has dedicated her life to bringing life back to the parched wastelands of the planet. Natalie specialises in nature magicks and animal empathy, but she is also skilled in using familiars and astral forms. Survival teacher and stoic brother of Sabeen. Perhaps the strictest of teachers, no student dares to argue with him – but he is only harsh because he knows the dangers of the world. Known elsewhere as ‘Azarat the Asura’ and ‘Azarat of the Seven Blades’.

Prince of the Water Queendom, and Phantasia’s closest friend. He made it his life goal to help her find her identity. When the Queendom was attacked by Cecaelia, Dionysus sacrificed his life, believing he had nothing left to achieve in this world. Phantasia’s lady-in-waiting and close friend. She is a Water faerie ruled by logic and her desire for truth.
Eudore Thalassa
Faye’s mentor and handmaiden of Lady Princess Panopea, herself a handmaiden of Queen Thetis. Custodian of the gate to the Holy Sanctuary, she is one of the oldest known faeries.

A prince of the Wind Queendom who was a close associate to Dionysus. He disappeared shortly after his friend’s death, leading some to believe he too had sacrificed his life. A princess of the Wind Queendom. A beautiful faerie idolised by many of her kindred. She disappeared soon after Prince Freyr vanished.

Once a member of the Wind Queendom’s Royal Court. He likes to dress well and speaks with flowery language. Formally a Prince of the Earth Queendom, he now works with other renegade faeries for an unknown purpose.

A Fire faerie who switches between a ditzy persona and a serious, arrogant one on a whim. She was once handmaiden to Princess Yosei of the Fire Queendom, but abandoned her world to serve Diffaith. A young faerie of Wind and Water elements. He specialises in sealing magics. His calm, logical nature acts as a foil to Yokai’s hot-headedness. He sacrificed himself to save Phantasia from the Patriarch as her selfless actions intrigued him.

Demons

Former aide to Queen Thetis, she betrayed her Queendom and became a demon bent on destroying it. Her campaign was short-lived, however, and her feeble armies were crushed under King Nereus’s strategic defence. Shadow-creatures that are formed from – and feed on – strong human emotions. Nothing more the primordial manifestations of negative emotions, they lack sentience but can become dangerous if allowed to increase in power.

Godhand

Head of Torsten’s church of Godhand, Bishop Wotan had an antagonistic relationship with his childhood rival, Rembrandt Payne. His actions were all part of an elaborate scheme to expose Godhand’s rulers as demons, which also cost him his life. One of the leaders of Godhand, he came to Torsten to expose Bishop Wotan as a fraud and to oversee Godhand’s total occupation of the town – but thanks to the combined efforts of rivals Wotan and Payne he was exposed as a demon and his army vanquished.

Others

Appeared before Phantasia at the World Axis. It “didn’t exist” according to her senses but Queen Thetis says the figure once helped humans to fight the Apostles. An image of Primordial Darkness that appeared in the hearts and dreams of people during the cataclysm. It is a reminder of the corruption that brought to world to its knees and its image can be seen across the world.
