I’ve realised that more recent chapters have received a much more thorough treatment than the first bunch (which I’m resisting the urge to revise until I have more free time). I guess this is partly down to attitude – back in the beginning this was just something I was doing for the hell of it, and I didn’t expect large numbers of readers. Now that’s changed and I try to be more professional with the ‘final’ product. This means more rewrites, more time spent on editing, and more effort put into everything in general.
Examples this chapter: that illustration up there for a start! I’d not planned the background to be quite that ‘busy’… Another example would be Lyra’s accent/dialect. I decided to do a little bit of research and add a bit more Irish into her. They say a sign of a good writer is being able to tell which character is speaking from their dialogue alone – and trying to give all these characters unique verbal ticks isn’t easy!
I’ll admit – quite a few of them don’t even have a ‘confirmed’ voice in my head, so who knows what they sound like to other people! I know if I played you audio clips, you might be shocked at what some of them sound like in my head!
The next chapter was hellish to write, by the way. It involves pulling together a lot of things that have happened and bringing those plot threads together. After that, it’s going to be one long roller-coaster ride to chapter 60!
*Speaking of TV Tropes, several people have mentioned to me that I ought to put Phantasia on there, but I’m reluctant – I am the author after all! But if anyone out there is familiar with that time-consuming abomination of the Internet and wants to throw it in there somewhere, it would be appreciated XD
Also: there’s some kind of web fiction award thing going on here. This is one I absolutely can’t nominate myself for, but if anyone feels like nominating then go ahead! You can read more about the awards here – looks like there’s a dearth for anything that isn’t fiction, so if you have any ideas for other nominations (or places you could pass this whole malarkey onto) GET TO IT!
That was completely unexpected, meeting Princess Titania like that. Also I was expecting it to be one of the renegade faeries not a teacher or the princess who was the cause of the illusion @_@
“Phantasia’s dislike for scheming and manipulation: naivete, admirable, or just plain ignorance?”
Well, of course the Idealist in me thinks it’s quite admirable. (Especially with the aftertaste of the Bush/Cheney years still fresh in my mouth.) Then again, the Realist/Cynic (these days it’s damn near impossible to tell the two apart) knows that scheming and manipulation are practically imperatives of human nature. I’m not sure how ignorance enters into the picture. Phantasia seems to me to be smart enough to know that humans have their dark side, but she also knows that the vast majority of them don’t give their souls over to it.
I must say that I find Phantasia’s distaste for manipulation to be quite admirable. If more people (and faeries) acted to stop manipulation and simply dealt with things head on, then I don’t think it would be so necessary for us. We have to manipulate because we’re too weak to get anything done otherwise. Phantasia’s method is turbulent sure, but better in the long run.
Faye is master of the Batman Gambit!*

Yep, pretty much! Thus proving my foreshadowing isn’t *too* obscure XD

The next chapter should give a little more insight on what’s she’s trying to do
