    All too easy?

Nothing is too easy without a reason. This will have repercussions, don’t you worry. Simply put, Faye had to intervene, or there was no way they were getting any further. Believe me, I plotted out a “no Faye intervention” version just to make sure. Joel ended up with broken ribs again XD

The idea of this chapter isn’t to have John and Theseus start believing in magic: that would go against their characters. It’s their attitude changing from “what the hell is this shit, are you crazy?” to “whatever the hell this shit is, let’s take it down and get a move on,”. Or, in John’s case, deciding that maybe it’s all just technology beyond his current understanding (after all, some of the technology in the 31st century is capable of what we would call ‘magic’!). Now they’ve put aside their hesitation look forward to some interesting interactions to come. They form an unlikely team with a certain other character in the next chapter that was rather fun to write…

    Things to note:
~ What happened when John passed the golem? The propulsion pack was detached and he used the grappling hook/power of momentum to swing away from the plasma explosion. The golem managed to catch the pack with a swipe, but wasn’t designed to deal with such a tricky manoeuvre from its target. Not so much quick thinking as John’s crazy-preparedness.

    Things to consider:
~ Was the golem really that easy to defeat, or was it a feint?

Not a lot to talk about this chapter. That or I have to be awake in six hours >_> *flails*

    >.< Joel is going to get tem all killed at the rate he's going!

I recall you saying that this little “adventure” was going to leave one character realizing how useless they were and what sort of repercussions it would have on their actions. I’m going to go out on a limb and name Joel as this person you described.

  4. Atrun says:

I would have to agree with Shinami that Joel is likely the useless character. Although I do also think he will wind up helping out of sheer dumb luck. He’ll blunder into usefulness and realize just how pathetic he was that the one time he was actually helpful was an accident. That’s the optimist in me. The pessimist says he’s going to almost get one or more of them killed and turn into even more of an emo kid.

  5. Gamer says:

Joel is TOTALLY not the worst! I still think Pheonie will have a mental breakdown before this arc is out and you should post the “no Faye” version just for the lulz. Also, How did Theseus manage to knock those grunts as you don’t really say?

    • Dary says:

“That idiot,” said Theseus, holstering his tranq-gun
He took them out with his tranquilliser gun, proper Solid Snake style. It’s become his firearm-of-choice!

As for the non-Faye version, it went something like this:
      - the group approaches cautiously, unaware this thing could be ‘alive’
      - they get close and it lashes out, catching them by surprise
      - Joel tries to be a hero and charges it with his sword
      - Joel gets his ribs broken, the group retreats to a safe distance
      - John and Theseus try out different weapons, but every time the golem regenerates
      - John tries the flying-past-really-fast angle. It works, but the propulsion pack is destroyed. John is trapped in the cavern beyond while the golem returns to its guardian position. The others can’t pass. As a last ditch attempt they try explosives. The cave in doesn’t make a difference and they block the tunnel, forced to turn back and seek an alternative route. Kaori takes Joel topside for medical attention. John informs them via their cells that there might be other ways into the cavern – he’s scanning it himself, but by the time they get there it’s too late. revealing much else would spoil the next few chapters, but suffice to say the outcome is a lot worse!!
