37: Imperfect Recall, part II

“What I believe is not what is important here, Princess, it is what you believe. We do not act without reason. If you can prove to us your reasoning, then we shall act.”

It was a test.

“Princess, I have made arrangements that will benefit you. Faye shall be joining you in the human world. I shall grant her a token of my power so that, when the time comes and should you convince her of your reasoning, this magic can be broken.”

Phantasia was dumbfounded. Faye was going to join her in the human world? A fellow faerie? Her handmaiden? The serious young girl whose tactless statements of truth would get her in no end of trouble with each and every human she met?

She had began the conversation with the Queen to try and calm the frustration in her heart and, when the giant whale turned to ethereal rain that glistened like a thousand crystals across the church, those feelings had been replaced with hope.

Developing auragraphs was a time-consuming process, but Katrina was fortunate enough to have a darkroom of her own to work in. Sitting in the dull amber light for hours adjusting slides and watching images creep to life may have bored anyone else, but for Katrina it was a relaxing pleasure. Except this time. She had high expectations for this film and found herself pacing around the small floorspace while waiting for the first images to appear.

When they did, she had to double take before she could accept what she was looking at. A man dressed in extravagant robes and accompanied by armoured knights, whose auras were unlike anything she’d seen from a human before. It were as if they had gained some sort of control over the nebulous mist that surrounded them and had managed to forge it into a definitive shape – almost like a spiritual armour. It was the robed man’s aura that frightened her most of all, though, for rather than flowing around him in the vague shape of a body it looked as if it were an entirely different, more monstrous entity, crackling with power. A demonic face stared back at her like something from her worst…

Dreams?

Katrina left the pictures to dry and slipped out of the dark room and into her bed. Right now the only thing she wanted was sleep. Maybe it would piece together the jigsaw of memories that had just emptied itself inside her mind.
